A majority of Americans are concerned about the national debt – and most think the government ought to pay more attention to the issue and treat it as a top priority, a monthly survey found.

June polling by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation for its "fiscal confidence index" found 53 percent think the country is on the wrong track regarding the national debt; 31 percent believe it's on the right path.

Further, 72 percent believe the national debt should be among the government’s top three priorities; 76 percent said the president and Congress should spend more time on the issue.

The updated survey was posted by The Hill ahead of its public release Tuesday.

"As policymakers continue to consider legislation in key reform areas, Americans are asking our leaders to focus on our fiscal future," Michael Peterson, president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, told The Hill.

"Voters understand that the national debt is the one issue that affects all the others, and want Congress to achieve durable policy solutions for the fiscal health of our nation," he added.

The survey has a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
