Rep. Pete King: Release Jihadi John's Identity

By    |   Monday, 02 Feb 2015 07:48 PM

House Intelligence Committee member Rep. Pete King said he sees no reason why the identity of "Jihadi John," the British citizen seen with his face covered in Islamic State (ISIS) beheading videos, should not be identified to the public.

British intelligence knows who the man is and has shared that information with American intelligence.

Asked about the issue Monday on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," King, a New York Republican, said he thinks the more people who know who the man is, the more likely he could be found.

"If we are going to have any hope of using bounties in that part of the world, … the more people who would recognize him or see him the better [we] would be," King said. "How really significant it would be, I don't know. But I don't think there's any down side to it unless there's something out there that we're not aware of."

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told Blitzer that the United States is following the lead of Great Britain, which has so far chosen not to identify the man.

"Jihadi John" was seen in this weekend's beheading video of a Japanese journalist.
