The Pentagon is reportedly pushing for the same exemption granted to Iraqis who served U.S. troops to be extended to U.S. "partners" in six other majority-Muslim nations under President Donald Trump's immigration halt.

"The majority of the people who are affected by this [executive order] would be the Iraqi people who have helped us, such as translators," Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said, Stars and Stripes reported.

"But there are people in other countries too who are impacted . . . who have demonstrated similar levels of action that have been in support of important U.S. military operations."

"A lot of people who currently serve – a lot of our veterans – owe their lives to these people, literally," he added.

The Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday that Iraqi translators and others who have gotten special immigrant visas based on their service to the United States in Iraq would not be affected by the travel ban.

"We want to make sure that [their service] is taken into account when they face the U.S. immigration process," Davis said of those who helped American troops in the other travel-ban countries.

He did not say how many people might be affected.
