Pokémon Go, an "augmented reality" mobile game based on the 1990's Japanese franchise, has been banned within Defense Department facilities over security concerns.

A Pentagon source told The Washington Times that the most downloaded mobile app which allows individuals to hunt virtual cartoon creatures could facilitate foreign spying and even pinpoint locations where secrets may be stored.

The game — developed by Pokémon Company International, Niantic Inc. and Nintendo Co Ltd — uses GPS mapping and camera systems on players' devices. A memorandum was sent on July 19 warning Defense Department officials of the potential security risks the game may pose to "secure and sensitive facilities."

In addition, the Times notes that Pentagon security is not only concerned that data and locations of rooms are at risk, but also the personal data of Pentagon officials, which could also be used in cyber-attacks or foreign spying attempts.

Pokémon Go has become a cultural phenomenon since the smartphone app was released in July 2016.

And, when the game was originally launched, users who signed into the app from their personal Google accounts were giving up massive amounts of private data, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Although Pokémon Go employs Google Maps to place players on a real map to catch the creatures, the Times notes that subsequent the games release, there has since been a software update and the amount of data the creators are able to collect.
