The Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation credited Marissa Mayer, Yahoo's chief executive, for the company's help with the probe into the hacking of at least 500 million Yahoo accounts in 2014.

Mayer exhibited "great leadership and courage while under intense pressure from many entities," Jack Bennett, FBI San Francisco Division special agent, said, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"You'd be amazed by the number of companies whose first instinct is to duck and cover," said Michael Sulmeyer, director at Cyber Security Project.

The Justice Department on Wednesday announced indictments of four people, including two Russian spies, in the hack attack, according to CNN.

Officials said that hackers were able to use information they gained until December 2016. The officials did not blame Yahoo for the hacks, saying the company was victimized in an "unfair fight" against hackers sponsored by Russia.

Yahoo's board of directors was more critical of Mayer, cutting her pay after a review found "failures in communication, management, inquiry, and internal reporting." The company lowered its own sale price by $350 million after the incident, the Journal notes.

After the arrests, Mayer publicly thanked U.S. authorities in a Twitter post.
