President Barack Obama will veto the bill passed Friday that would allow 9/11 victims and their families to sue Saudi Arabia in U.S. Courts, the White House said Monday.

Declaring that "the president feels very strongly about this," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Obama will veto the legislation passed resoundingly in Congress.

Earnest explained that the bill (which passed the House by voice vote on Friday with the help of its sponsor, Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y.), "opens up the U.S. to being hauled into courts around the world."

"It's not hard to imagine other countries hauling U.S. service members, U.S. diplomats, and even U.S. companies into courts around the world," said the President's top spokesman.

Earnest also said that permitting 9/11 victims' families to sue the Saudi government "could set up a situation in which judges at different levels reach different conclusions" about what is a terrorist state.

Victims and their families have long complained about their lack of recourse against Saudi involvement in the attacks — 15 of the 19 perpetrators were Saudi nationals – and have argued for the right to sue and legally explore the involvement of this foreign power.

The bill amends a 1976 law that grants foreign states immunity from lawsuits in the U.S. and would let Americans sue any nation that was directly involved in terror attacks against U.S. nationals.

It is unlikely that Congress will act on a possible veto override before Election Day. But supporters such as Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who introduced the bill in the Senate, have expressed confidence that there are sufficient votes to achieve the first veto override of Obama's term in office.
