A former national security adviser to President Barack Obama told Politico his former boss should have called out Russia's meddling "in a much more aggressive way."

Tom Donilon, Obama's NSA for nearly three years until 2013, said the then-president should have acted against Russia last summer.

"I think more aggressive public attribution would have been a more appropriate thing to do at this point, looking back on it. No doubt about it," Donilon told Politico. "It's easy from the outside to say that. I do think that calling this out in a much more aggressive way would have been a better course of action."

Donilon was heading up Hillary Clinton's national security transition in the event she won the election.

"They were very concerned about it, absolutely. And again, there were public pieces of this that were out there that the Russians had engaged or entities acting on behalf of the Russians," Donilon said.

And that should have been enough of a trigger, even if Obama and his security team thought that Clinton was going to win.

"I can understand how you would have considered that or how that might have affected the decision," Donilon told Politico. "But the decision is a national security decision, and I do think that given the seriousness of this,  given the fact that they were attacking a fundamental element of our democracy.

"That pushing back harder and publicly, I think probably would have been a better course of action, frankly."

Donilon said he strove to stay out of the politics of such a decision, instead focusing on solely the national security of it, a point to which he rebuked President Donald Trump.

"There's a deep contradiction in President Trump's statements, right? I don't know how you can say it didn't happen or maybe it didn't happen or others might have done it and then criticize President Obama for not responding to something that might not have happened. That's a political point," Donilon said.
