Obama’s Popularity Continues to Drop, Gallup Chief Says

By    |   Friday, 22 Mar 2013 08:41 PM

President Barack Obama’s approval rating is continuing to plummet — and when the downtrend will reverse is hard to say, according to Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of the Gallup Poll.

Newport tells Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show” the commander-in-chief’s percentage points began sinking after the sequester crisis.

“Not just our poll but every poll shows that Obama’s ratings are down,” Newport says.

“A new poll out yesterday or today showed the same thing. It had been up in the 50s and now he’s in the mid-to-high 40s and we clearly showed that as well.

“After the election he was trending up. He really peaked around Christmastime; he was doing well in January; but in the last several weeks he’s started to come down.”

The battle over sequestration is likely the main reason for the slide, but not the only one,  Newport tells Malzberg on Friday.

Newport notes that even the president’s attempts to woo Republican leaders by inviting several GOP lawmakers to a private dinner didn’t help tick the numbers up.

“No, they’ve been down. In February his ratings were at 51, 52 [percent] and in January up to 53, 54 percent,” he says.

“But in the last three weeks through Sunday, his ratings were 49, 49, and 48 on average, so they’re below 50 percent,” Newport tells Malzberg. “Our three-day average as of today … is 47 percent.”
