Former President Barack Obama officially returns to political activity this week when he headlines a private fundraiser for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee in Washington, Politico reported on Monday.

Since ending his tenure as president, Obama has released several statements defending Obamacare, backed Tom Perez in his bid to become Democratic National Committee chairman and subtly criticized President Donald Trump in several speeches. However, Thursday's event will mark his first overtly post-White House political act.

The event is meant to coordinate Democratic efforts in state races and lawsuits to counter long-term success Republican have had in gerrymandering, which has left Democrats at a disadvantage.

During Obama's presidency, the Democrats suffered massive losses in both the House and in state legislatures.

A few dozen people will be at the event, including NDRC chair Eric Holder and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, The Washington Post reported.

Perez said that "when you lose 900 state legislative seats, those are people who could have been the next governors and senators and Cabinet positions, and that is something that [Obama's] very committed to… Because tomorrow's president is today's state senator."

Obama's spokesman Kevin Lewis said in a statement that the former president backs the committee's "efforts to address unfair gerrymandering practices that leave too many American voters feeling voiceless in the electoral process," The Post reported.

Despite the setbacks over the last several years, Democrats have recently had cause for optimism due to some legal victories that have struck down congressional districts as unconstitutional in North Carolina, Alabama and Virginia.

Obama also is expected to return to the campaign trail soon in support of Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam, according to Politico.
