The Obama administration last year released seven Iranians to the terrorist nation, some who were considered a threat to the national security of the United States by the former president's own Justice Department, Politico reported.

And it deceived Congress, its own agencies and the American people in the process, Politico reported.

While the Obama administration characterized the seven as civilians who were awaiting trial for violating trade sanctions, three were accused of illegally supplying Iran with technology for its surface-to-air and cruise missiles, and a fourth was serving prison time for conspiring to send satellite technology and hardware to Iran, Politico reported.

Further, the Obama administration dropped charges against 14 other Iranians, Politico reported.

In doing so, the Obama administration thwarted its own National Counterproliferation Initiative, aimed at thwarting Iran's nuclear program, Politico reported.

"They didn't just dismiss a bunch of innocent business guys," a former federal law enforcement supervisor told Politico. "And then they didn’t give a full story of it."

While the Obama administration framed the release as a goodwill gesture around the nuclear agreement with Iran, it's been outed as part of an effort by that president — along with hundreds of millions in cash sent to Iran — to pay a ransom to obtain the release of 5 American prisoners from Iran.

And in doing so, Obama kicked the can on Iran's nuclear capabilities right into the lap of President Donald Trump.

"How much damage was done to the law enforcement side of this from us pulling back from these prosecutions?" David Albright, of the Institute for Science and International Security, said to Politico. "We have to pick up the pieces."
