At least 1,000 Secret Service agents have been putting in free overtime hours for months, but President Barack Obama signed legislation Friday that will ensure they are paid.

According to The Hill, some of the agents maxed out their annual pay allowance of $160,300 before the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in the summer. Because of the presidential campaign, the agents have worked extra hours for free.

A bill passed by both Houses of Congress landed on Obama's desk, and he signed it into law before his annual vacation in Hawaii begins this weekend.

The Secret Service provides protection for presidents, vice presidents, presidents- and vice presidents-elect, former presidents, and all of their families. They also handle protection for foreign dignitaries visiting the U.S.

The Secret Service has had an especially challenging time guarding Trump Tower, which is located in bustling Manhattan. New York City police have been helping secure the building, and Mayor Bill de Blasio asked President Barack Obama to reimburse his city $35 million for Trump-related security.
