Report: Dem Think Tank Plotted Media War Against Iran Deal Foes

A leading Democratic think tank has been working behind the scenes to wage a media war in support of the Obama Administration’s plans to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran and to depict skeptics as "un-American warmongers," The Washington Free Beacon reports.

The Truman National Security Project has been quietly preparing to persuade the public to support a U.S.-Iran nuclear agreement since July 2013, according to documents obtained by the Free Beacon.

Internal emails showed that Truman was seeking to put together a "crack team of writers" to inundate the media with information supporting an Iran deal.

Graham F. West, Truman’s writing and communications associate, wrote that "Our community absolutely must step up and not cede the public narrative to neocon hawks that would send our country to war just to screw the president."

Truman Vice President for Strategic Communications David Solimini provided talking points to spin the U.S.-Iran talks as a "win-win" situation for the United States. He suggested that members of Congress who are skeptics of an Iran deal be accused of not "rooting" for a U.S. victory, the Free Beacon reported.

"If they kill the deal, they should be blamed for the consequences," he wrote.
Solimini also recommended that Truman associates try to rebut skeptics who say that "no deal is better than a bad deal."

Without a deal with Iran, there will be "another war in the Middle East," he added.
The Obama Administration has long insisted that it would never accept a bad agreement. But with the Nov. 24 deadline for reaching one rapidly approaching, officials have sounded increasingly dire in discussing the possibility that negotiations with Iran would fail.

Late last month, Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, the chief U.S. negotiator in nuclear talks with Iran, warned that the alternatives to reaching an agreement with Tehran are "quite terrible," Bloomberg reports.

If negotiations failed, then "escalation will be the name of the game on all sides, and none of that is good," Sherman said.

Josh Block, a former Clinton administration official and current CEO of the Israel Project, was sharply critical of Truman and the Obama administration, the Free Beacon reports.

He termed Truman’s "campaign in support of any Iran deal" a "betrayal of Democratic values and sad proof of how corrupt and intellectually dishonest the left wing of the Democratic Party has become."

It is "clearer than ever that blindly following this White House’s lead on national security issues will lead not only to a nuclear Iran, but to defeat at the ballot box," Block said.
