Newt Gingrich: Racial Tension Up Under Obama, Holder

There's been a dramatic rise in racial tension across the country under President Barack Obama and former Attorney General Eric Holder, and racism of all forms must be opposed, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday.

"I think a lot of their approach heightened that racial tension, and I think we have to oppose white racism," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" show in response to a Facebook Live video showing four young African-American suspects beating and torturing a young white man who suffers from mental health issues.

"We also have to oppose black racism," Gingrich said. "And if this had been done to a African-American by four whites, there would be no question it was a hate crime."

The nation is "at the edge of a terrible period," Gingrich continued. "I know President-elect Donald Trump wants to avoid having deep, bitter division in the communities in a way that makes America very hard to govern."

However, violence is growing, said Gingrich, using Chicago as an example.

"There have been nearly 4,000 people shot in Chicago with no effective response from Mayor [Rahm] Emanuel and no effective response from President Obama," said Gingrich. "I think people feel that they're really alienated from their government, and you have no one to turn to, and you end up with this really destructive, and I think frightening, kind of development."

Gingrich said the punishment should "come down like a ton of bricks" on the four suspects, and criticized a Chicago police commander for saying that the attackers will be charged "appropriately" should the facts guide them that way.

"Can you imagine if four 18-year-old white males had done that to an African-American with disability?" said Gingrich. "Would you have the police going, 'oh, gosh. We're not sure what's going on.' We need to send a message to the country don't do this. We don't care whether you're white or black. We don't care what your excuse is. We're not tolerating this."

Gingrich Thursday also discussed the ongoing talk about Obamacare, calling Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer "Senator No" because he's rejected so many things.

"I would say to Sen. Schumer, if you look at what happened to Jeb Bush or Hillary Clinton, you should be very worried if Donald Trump decides to focus on you, because so far the track record is pretty good. He can define you a lot better than you can define him," Gingrich warned.

He also called contentions from Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, that Obamacare could end immediately a "lie."

"There's nothing Republicans are going to do that's going to change long-term care under Medicare," said Gingrich. As reform will strengthen Medicaid and Medicare by giving the government more flexibility, more ability to manage it, and make dollars work. This is a liberal Democratic lie."

Republicans, while repealing Obamacare, will need to "build a bridge to a healthier, better system, and, and it has to be clear to Americans what's happening," said Gingrich.
