The New York Post is urging Hillary Clinton to run for the city's mayor, even though its editorial board admitted in an opinion piece Friday it was "highly critical" of the former Secretary of State while she was running for president because of her "far-to-the-left" stance.

Clinton would prove "dead-center in the city's Democratic majority," the newspaper's editorial board agreed, as she is "progressive, but not obsessed with proving it" and she would not be using the mayor's seat as a springboard to national office.

"She'd actually focus on doing the job," said the board "Clinton is a famously diligent worker — one who shows up on time and puts in the hours. And New York needs a mayor who'll run herd on city government."

The Post reported Friday that New York City's Democratic activists are clamoring for Clinton to take on Mayor Bill de Blasio in a primary election this year, saying she'd represent the change the city needs.

Their comments come on the heels of an exclusive from Newsmax chief political columnist and White House correspondent John Gizzi, who reported on Wednesday that the ex-secretary state is being courted by Democratic donors and leaders to run in this year's primary against de Blasio.

Clinton advisors are reportedly urging her to stay close in the event she wants to try another run for the White House in 2020, Gizzi reported, but many of her closest allies say that likely won't happen.

In their editorial, The Post complained that de Blasio spends time on "politics and PR stunts" while his deputies run the city, and they are allowing several crises to grow.

"Clinton is a fighter and a problem-solver. For eight years, she was a fine senator for this state, working relentlessly on 9/11 recovery and also for constituents in areas far from the media spotlight," the editorial board said.

She would need to become a city resident and build ties to its neighborhoods, the board said, but she's not a stranger to the city, the editorial continued, and there are not any other local Democrats who could mount a serious challenge to de Blasio.
