"Today" show co-host Matt Lauer has been widely panned by the public and the media over his hosting duties during Wednesday's "Commander-in-Chief" forum, and CNN reported NBC executives are in agreement.

CNN's Brian Stelter reported one NBC executive as terming it a "disaster."

Among the criticism was Lauer seemed underprepared for the interviews with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump. And critics also felt Lauer was tougher on Clinton and didn't challenge Trump enough.

Another CNN source said NBC News and MSNBC chairman Andy Lack is also to blame, as he was heavily involved in the forum's planning.

"This should be a black eye for Lack," Stelter quoted the source.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, which was involved in organizing the forum, told CNN his group would have liked more questions from veterans in the audience.

"We expected a serious discussion. We left disappointed," veteran and author Dave Cullen, who was in attendance, said.
