The United States and several European nations are taking part in a large-scale cybersecurity exercise hosted by NATO.

The NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Estonia organized "Locked Shields 2017," an exercise in which 800 participants in 25 countries "will have to defend the services and networks of a military air base of a fictitious country, against cyber-attacks targeting the base's electric power grid system, drones, military command and control systems and other infrastructure. More than 2500 cyber-attacks will be simulated," according to a NATO press release.

"IT experts will train to defend computer networks and handle legal and forensic challenges, policy officers will exercise their decision-making procedures."

Aere Reintam, the center's technical director, told The Hill that they are "taking into consideration current key trends in cybersecurity" and "introducing even more specialized systems to the exercise. This enables us to prepare cybersecurity experts to protect even better vital networks and systems that they are not working with on a regular basis."

Reintam added that "in the course of the years Locked Shields has become a benchmark of live-fire technical exercises for our partners and other like-minded nations, the model of this exercise has been used in several countries."
