McConnell Encourages House to Move on Immigration Reform

By    |   Monday, 15 Jul 2013 10:29 AM

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is urging House Republicans to pass an immigration reform package, so the two chambers can together get legislation through Congress.

The Kentucky Republican emphasized the importance of the bill having a rigorous proposal for border security, an issue he said was "deficient" in the Senate plan.

"I don't think anybody's satisfied with the status quo on immigration," McConnell said. "And I hope the House will be able to move forward on something and we can get this into conference and get an outcome that will be satisfactory for the American people."

The House is expected to approach immigration reform through a series of separate measures, and a proposal on border security may be voted on before the August recess if it gets through the committee phase, according to The Hill.

"The question is, can we actually get the border secure and not have this happen again? That's the stickiest issue," McConnell said. "And I think the House will concentrate on that. I hope they will. We need to seriously beef up the border security part. I think that's the key to getting a final outcome."

McConnell has said that the lack of a strong border-security measure was the reason http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50149805n, he voted against the Senate bill when it came up for a vote in June.
