McCain: Trump's Orders Fueling ISIS With 'More Propaganda'

By    |   Sunday, 29 Jan 2017 12:52 PM

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., often a critic of President Donald Trump, said Sunday the recent executive orders to ban Syrian refugees and visa-holders from seven countries – which was originally outlined by former President Barack Obama's administration – might be "more propaganda" to fuel the ISIS fire against the U.S.

"The effect will probably, in some areas, give ISIS some more propaganda," McCain told CBS's "Face the Nation."

"But I'm very concerned about our affect on the Iraqi's right now. The dominant influence in Iraq today is not the United States of America – it's Iran. So, what will the Iraqi parliament do? If we're talking about the fight against extremists and ISIS, there is a battle going on as we speak.

"We certainly don't need an impediment in driving ISIS out."

"Our friends and allies" should have been told the executive order was coming, McCain told host John Dickerson.

"Another thing that should of been done, of course, is to alert our friends and allies what we were doing, because we expect them to cooperate, because people are leaving from these various places, particularly in Europe," McCain told "Face the Nation."

Iran has already announced it will respond in kind to President Trump's "insulting" executive orders Friday, and will ban Americans from entering their country, the foreign ministry told the AP on Saturday.

McCain has long battled President Trump on a number of fronts. President Trump once questioned McCain's status as an America military hero.

"He's not a war hero," Trump once infamously proclaimed. "He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

McCain had also acknowledged earlier this month he passed on a controversial Trump private and foreign intelligence dossier to the FBI for investigation.
