Defense Secretary James Mattis has told Congress President Donald Trump's proposed Pentagon budget falls short of covering the cost of rebuilding the military, CNN is reporting.

Mattis has not raised any public concerns about Trump's proposed $603 billion budget request for the military, which includes a sizeable increase over last year's funding plan.

But in a series of meetings, he has privately told members of Congress it isn't enough, according to the news network.

Trump has maintained his budget proposal, will pay for a major military buildup, including a 350-ship Navy, the Washington Examiner reported.

But sources tell CNN that Mattis remains concerned.

"Mattis continues to express to members of the Armed Services Committees that he's being thwarted getting his message out that $603 billion is insufficient to do what Trump has called for," said a Republican lawmaker, who requested anonymity to speak candidly about internal deliberations.

Mattis had met behind closed doors with the congressional defense committees to discuss the budget, CNN said.

"The secretary has told lawmakers a rebuild is not possible, one of the sources said, with the increase only enough to dig out of the military's readiness holes caused by budget constraints over the past several years," CNN's Jeremy Herb reported.
