Tea Party Leader Martin to Newsmax: Court ‘Got It Wrong’

By    |   Thursday, 28 Jun 2012 01:32 PM

The head of the Tea Party Patriots said Thursday the U.S. Supreme Court was wrong to uphold Obamacare, and pledged that her group would help Americans “correct this decision” by repealing the law.

“The court got it wrong,” Jenny Beth Martin told Newsmax.TV. “I think that historians are going to look back on today and equate this decision to past mistakes like Plessy v. Ferguson and the Dred Scott case.

“The voters had to correct those decisions, and the Tea Party Patriots will work with voters to correct this decision,” she said.

Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. In 1857, the high court ruled in his case that people of African descent could not be U.S. citizens. And in 1896 in Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court upheld the principle of segregated public facilities for blacks and whites known as “separate but equal.”

Martin said the justices’ ruling would inspire not just her group, which claims 15 million members nationwide, but also Americans as a whole to prevent President Barack Obama from being re-elected.

“It will rally the Tea Party base. More importantly, the majority of Americans do not want this law. They want it repealed,” she told Newsmax.TV.

No matter how the court ruled, she said most Americans believe the individual mandate forcing uninsured Americans to buy health care coverage is unconstitutional.

“What I think is going to happen is that it’s going to rally Americans, and Americans will rise to the occasion, step up and support our Constitution,” Martin said. “People who thought November 2010 was big, just wait until this November.”

Martin said she was concerned about how the government would be able to pay for Obama’s health care overhaul.

“It’s projected to cost $17 trillion, and you can compare that to the $7 trillion that Social Security is supposed to cost, according to the Senate, and it’s over the next 75 years,” she said. “We don’t have the money to pay for Sociial Security as it is, and we certainly are not going to have the money to pay for this.”

Martin said the Tea Party Patriots would keep fighting for fiscal responsibility and constitutionally limited government.

“We will look at making sure that our fellow voters understand what’s at stake and understand these issues, so that when they go to the polls, they’re voting to uphold our Constitution,” she stold Newsmax.TV.

“The wonderful thing about America is that the citizens have the authority over the government, and we’re going to do everything we can to ensure that it continues to remain that way,” she added.
