Rep. Blackburn: Obama 'Tone Deaf' on Americans' Needs

By    |   Monday, 19 Jan 2015 08:09 PM

Rep. Marsha Blackburn on Monday called President Barack Obama "tone deaf" to the needs of Americans as he plans his State of the Union speech on Tuesday.

Obama plans to propose $320 billion in tax increases over 10 years that he says will pay for free community college tuition, expand the child care tax credit, workplace leave and homeowner credits.

Appearing on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren," the Tennesse Republican said Obama is "tone deaf" when he throws out "all of these grandiose ideas."

"The American Dream is not being dependent on the federal government for your health care, for your automobile, for your college education, for your student loan on and on and on," Blackburn said. "The American Dream is independence and being able to create that dream for yourself."

People also don't want government taking more of their freedom away and having to live as the government prescribes, she said.

Blackburn said the Republican alternative should include cutting discretionary spending.

"One percent across the board saves us $4 billion in one year," she said.

She also would like to see Medicaid and other entitlements reformed as well as stabilizing the Social Security and Medicare trust funds.

"Look at what this does to seniors when you talk about raising cap gains, taxing investments that seniors have made building their nest egg so that they can retire," she said. "The president does not understand the federal government cannot get in here and control all of this. It makes things worse. "

A good formula to remember, Blackburn said is "Less regulation plus less taxation plus less litigation always equals more innovation and job creation."

Obama "still doesn't understand the best economic stimulus is a job," she said.
