Marco Rubio: Troops Needed in Afghanistan 'Because It's Our Problem'

ISIS is building a presence in Afghanistan and al-Qaida is making a resurgence, GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio said Friday, and it's important that enough troops remain there to not only defend themselves, but to conduct operations.

"Our people are going to be in a very, very dangerous, violent situation," the Florida Republican senator told Fox News "America's Newsroom" co-host Martha MacCallum in response to President Barack Obama's announcement that some troops would remain in the war-torn country even after he leaves office.

Obama has been promising troop reductions for some time, and Rubio said Friday that the Taliban and al-Qaida "waited and were biding their time" until U.S. troops were either gone or were at low levels.

"With each reduction in American troops, you saw more aggressive action on their part," said Rubio. "They are stepping into the vacuum and void we left behind."

Meanwhile, Afghan national forces do not have enough troops to fight off insurgents, Rubio said, and he fears that without the significant support of the United States, that will "lead to a significant vacuum in that region of the world."

He continued that if elected president, he'd work to prove that the the U.S. needs to maintain a continued presence in Afghanistan "because it's our problem."

"I would show them the magazines ISIS is producing and the publications coming out from al-Qaida," Rubio said.

"They talk about attacking America. They talk about recruiting Americans to join their cause and raise the black flag of ISIS over the White House and attack Americans here in the homeland, how they are going to target servicemen and women in their homes and community for killing and beheading."

ISIS, he continued, is not satisfied with merely controlling Syria and Iraq, but "they want to conquer the world" and will not leave the United States alone if it leaves them alone.
