Secretary of State John Kerry sounds "like a used car salesman" trying to pitch the Iran nuclear deal to Congress and the American people, according to a former ambassador in the Clinton administration.

Former ambassador to Morocco Marc Ginsberg lobbed the shot at Kerry during an interview with MSNBC, and a video of the remarks was posted by the Weekly Standard.

"[I]t's surprising to me that at this point in time, what is leaking out here is this so called side and secret agreements that seem to be poisoning the atmosphere," Ginsberg said when asked about skepticism over the deal aimed at keeping Iran from making a nuclear bomb.

"And Secretary Kerry is beginning to sound like a used car salesman who's not revealing what's underneath the chassis of the car, whether it's rusty or not."

Story continues below video.

The controversy over side agreements erupted last week when Kerry told House lawmakers in a closed-door meeting that he neither had nor read a copy of two secret side deals between the IAEA  and Iran.

"The issue over verification and role that the [International Atomic Energy Agency] may play here with Iran seems to be the latest flareup for what is essentially a lack of trust" between the Obama administration and Congress, Ginsberg said.

"The administration can ill afford at this time to have surprises at a time when there's such skepticism among the American people," he said, referring to a CNN poll showing a majority of the nation wants Congress to reject the nuclear deal.

Ginsberg went on to say that "secret annexes" could "torpedo this deal."
