Lieberman: We're All Responsible for Fiscal Cliff

By Amy Woods   |   Sunday, 25 Nov 2012 07:14 PM

Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Independent from Connecticut who is serving a final term and planning to retire, said during an interview with three other non-re-election-seeking legislators “we’re all guilty” of positioning American on the fiscal cliff.

“We’re all a part of how it got here,” said Lieberman, appearing Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Rep. Barney Frank and Sens. and Kay Bailey Hutchison and Jon Kyl.

Twenty-four years after he first took office and $16 trillion in debt later, Lieberman said, “The government is on automatic pilot to the fiscal cliff, to massive tax increases and, really, to horrible spending cuts on Jan. 1 unless we act. If Congress does nothing, which Congress has gotten pretty good at doing these days, we’ll go over the fiscal cliff. There’s work to be done and compromises to be reached.”

He said partisanship has reached “extreme” levels in recent years that has prevented such compromised from being reached.

“In my opinion, the last two years, 2011 / 12, have been the least productive and most partisan and uncompromising in my 24 years here,” he said. “I think the president really has the authority now to set the tone and cajole, convince, charm — occasionally coerce — people from both parties to sit down at the table and work out our problems.”
