Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. on Tuesday said President Donald Trump asked him to lead a task force to identify changes that should be made to the U.S. Department of Education's policies and procedures, the Chronicle of Higher Education reports.

Trump asked Falwell to take on the role in November at Trump Tower.

"The goal is to pare it back and give colleges and their accrediting agencies more leeway in governing their affairs," said Falwell, who declined Trump's offer to become U.S. education secretary. "I've got notebooks full of issues."

Falwell Jr., the son of the late televangelist, threw his support behind Trump last January, calling the then-Republican nominee "a successful executive and entrepreneur, a wonderful father and a man who I believe can lead our country to greatness again."

Liberty is a Christian college in Lynchburg, Va., and known for its conservative culture. Students follow a strict code of conduct at the university. They don't drink alcohol, they don't have sex outside of marriage and they don't wear shorts in class. Students are also required to attend "convocation," or a religious gathering that features guest speakers, three times a week.

Falwell, in his interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education, also said he supported the confirmation of Betsy DeVos for education secretary.
