CNN says it has not suspended former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski as a network commentator, and Mediaite has walked back its initial report.

The media site reported Wednesday morning that CNN pulled Lewandowski off the air that morning and suspended him after finding out he was still being paid by the Trump campaign over and above his severance.

The Washington Post's Erik Wemple posted a denial from CNN on Twitter.

Buzzfeed's Kyle Blaine reported a similar denial.

Mediaite backed off its report later in the morning, changing its copy and adding an editor's note:

Editor’s Note: Based on information from a high level CNN source, we initially reported that Corey Lewandowski was suspended from CNN. CNN has now gotten back to us and firmly denied that Lewandowski has been suspended, and said that he will be on air later today. We regret what now appears to have been an error and have made changes accordingly, but stand by our reporting that Lewandowski was pulled off the air this morning because of the brewing controversy.

Lewandowski, who started as a political contributor for the cable news channel on June 23, was pulled from appearing on CNN morning show "New Day" on Tuesday, Mediaite reported.

FEC filings from July and August showed Lewandowski's consulting company received $20,000 from the Trump campaign for "strategy consulting," The Washington Post reported.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks issued this statement to Mediaite:

"Corey Lewandowski, who is no longer involved in the campaign, continues to receive monthly severance payments. The campaign will continue to honor its contract with Mr. Lewandowski, which stipulates he will be paid through the end of the year. These payments are in no way compensation for services rendered," Hicks wrote.

CNN chief Jeff Zucker defended the hiring of Lewandowski internally, according to a Huffington Post report Monday.
