Leonardo DiCaprio's climate change-themed speech at the Oscars earlier this year garnered five times more attention on social media than Earth Day, according to the results of a new study.

The findings in the study, published in the Plos One scientific journal, found that the actor famous for his role in "Titanic" had a large impact on climate change awareness.

The study was reported by The Daily Caller.

"Social media engagement on climate change spiked after DiCaprio's speech even though news coverage of climate change did not statistically significantly increase," the study concludes.

"To put these trends in perspective, the response to DiCaprio's speech on Twitter was 5.3 times larger than Earth Day and 3.2 times larger than the daily average during the most recent [Conference of the Parties meeting]. Moreover, the number of tweets including the phrases 'climate change' or 'global warming' on the day of DiCaprio's speech were at the highest recorded value in our database with more than 250,000 tweets on that day."

DiCaprio starred in "The Revenant" and won the Academy Award for best actor at the February 28 event. The Daily Caller reports that more than 36 million people watched the annual awards show.

"Making 'The Revenant' was about man's relationship to the natural world, a world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history," DiCaprio said during his acceptance speech. "Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow.

"Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It's the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating."
