Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., is warning airlines to improve customer service or Congress will get involved, The Hill reported.

"At the end of the day, if they don't do things that we deem appropriate, Congress will act," Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, told the website.

Shuster's comments come as the House panel is set to hear Tuesday from on airline executives about overbooking and bumping practices. It comes after a passenger was violently dragged off a United Airlines flight last month.

"I'm not big on regulation, but I want to make sure they understand that if they don't respond in an appropriate way and take the right kind of measures, then Congress is going to do something at some point that they probably don't like," Shuster said.

And he added: "The United incident really brought it to a head. Customers in many cases are not being treated properly, and we need answers… I think the tone (of the hearing) should be tough, but fair."

United CEO Oscar Munoz is scheduled to address the committee. Other witnesses include officials from Alaska, American and Southwest airlines, USA Today reported.

The House hearing comes just two days before a Senate subcommittee has scheduled a similar meeting.

Lawmakers have already proposed legislation to potentially bar airlines from overbooking flights or to prevent carriers from removing a passenger who is seated aboard a plane, according to USA Today.

But Shuster tells The Hill he hopes the airline industry will take care of the problem without government regulations.

"I always think it's better if you do the right things instead of the government imposing on you," he said. "One size fits all doesn't work. It could be disastrous."
