The half-brother of Kim Jong Un, killed Monday in Malaysia, wrote a letter five years ago to the North Korean leader asking for his life to be spared, the Financial Times reported.

Lee Byung Ho, the head of South Korean intelligence, told lawmakers in Seoul on Wednesday that North Korean officials had been attempting to kill Kim Jong Nam for five years and he had written a letter to Jong Un asking him to spare the lives of him and his family 2012.

"This is not a calculated action to remove Kim Jong Nam, because he was a challenge to power per se, but rather reflected Kim Jong Un's paranoia," Lee said during a closed-door meeting at the National Assembly.

Jong Nam, the eldest son of the family, lived much of his life in exile. He died at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia after being poisoned by two women who were said to be carrying out an assassination order from Pyongyang, the North Korean capital.

A woman was arrested in connection with his death Wednesday.

Jong Un has ordered the executions of senior officials deemed possible challenges to his heir, including his uncle.

"If it was necessary for him to remove his brother, it implies Kim Jong Un worries about the possibility of elites waging a campaign to replace him," said Kim Jaechun, a professor at Sogang University in Seoul. "Particularly because Kim Jong-nam was older and age is very important in Korean culture."
