Judicial Watch: Obama's July Campaigning Cost Taxpayers $1.2M

President Barack Obama's fundraising trips to New York and Denver this July cost taxpayers nearly $1.2 million, the taxpayer watchdog group Judicial Watch reports.

Citing Department of Air Force records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, the group reported transportation costs for Obama's July 8-9 fundraising jaunt to Denver totaled $695,894, while costs for a July 17-18 trip to New York hit up taxpayers for another $463,929.

Judicial Watch said the Secret Service did not immediately respond to requests for documents tallying the estimated huge security costs.

The Washington Examiner notes the president has been a popular fixture on the fundraising trail, collecting millions for Democrats to battle Republicans on the ballot in November — and spending more time doing so than actually appearing with Democratic candidates.

According to Judicial Watch, the president, in Denver, schmoozed with voters at a pizza restaurant and a pool bar one day, and on the next delivered a speech at a Denver park before attending a fundraiser for a no-show Colorado Sen. Mark Udall.

The group also reported that Obama's New York trip involved a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.

"President Obama should be held to account for the exorbitant costs to taxpayers of his political fundraising activities," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said.

"Given the costs to taxpayers of his trip, that glass of beer in Denver the president chugged may have been the most expensive in history."

The group earlier this year revealed that Obama racked up nearly $16 million flying his family to Africa and on a Christmas vacation to Honolulu in 2013, and that his trip to Martha's Vineyard in August 2013 ran up a $1.1 million travel tab.
