President Donald Trump on Tuesday praised Arizona Sen. John McCain for returning to Washington after brain surgery to vote to advance debate on an outright repeal of Obamacare.

Trump took to Twitter:

McCain, 80, who was diagnosed with brain cancer after surgery 11 days ago, was greeted with a standing ovation when he entered the Senate chamber.

He was greeted by senators from both parties, including hugs from Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah and Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, before casting his vote to bring the measure to the floor for full debate.

The motion passed 51-50 after Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote between Republicans and Democrats.

"I voted for the motion to proceed to allow debate to continue and amendments be offered," McCain said on the floor. "I will not vote for this bill as it is today.

"It's a shell of a bill right now. We all know that."

He called for both parties to work together to create healthcare legislation that would help all Americans.

"We keep trying to win without help from the other side of the aisle," McCain said. "We are getting nothing done, my friends, we're getting nothing done.

"All we've managed to do was make more popular a policy that wasn't very popular," he said, referring to Obamacare.

At a news conference with Lebanese President Saad Hariri, Trump praised McCain for coming back to cast his vote and thanked Republicans for passing the procedural vote.

"Very brave man," Trump said in the White House Rose Garden. "He made a tough trip to get here and vote.

"We want to thank Sen. McCain and all of the Republicans."

The Senate last voted to repeal Obamacare in 2015, but it was vetoed by then-President Barack Obama.

The House has voted more than 50 times to end the healthcare program.
