John Kirby: 'Totally Ridiculous' Claim US Involved in Assassination

It's  "totally ridiculous" and "really unhelpful" to assert the U.S. was in any way involved in the assassination of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov in Turkey on Monday, State Department spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday.

"It's really unhelpful at this stage in the investigation to make such claims, that in some way the United States is involved or encouraged or enticed or had any kind of role whatsoever in the events in Ankara," Kirby told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"It's totally ridiculous to claim the United States was in any way involved in this."

According to Reuters, Turkey officials said they believed the gunman was a follower of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen.

The investigation into the attack must run its course, Kirby added and it's just getting started.

"We don't know exactly what motivated this man to assassinate the Russian ambassador. I think it needs to be fully investigated. We'll let the facts go where they go. Then we can make some conclusions.

"It's too early to jump to those kinds of conclusions that some people in Turkey have," Kirby added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the attack is a ploy to damage the peace process in Syria.

"Fox & Friends" host Brian Kilmeade questioned whether the U.S. was still privy to meetings about Syria.

Kirby said he understood why Iran, Russia, and Turkey might have meetings without U.S. involvement, because "there have always been multilateral discussions about Syria that we haven't been a party to. This is another one.

"I totally understand that," he continued. "What we've always said, look, if any multilateral effort can lead to a better outcome in Syria, then we would welcome that. We'll have to see."

The United States will still be involved diplomatically, he said. "If it can be successful, if they can do something that we haven't been able to do on a different multilateral effort in the past, that's so much the better."
