John Kelly was contemplating resigning as Department of Homeland Secretary in May because he was angry with the way President Donald Trump handled James Comey’s firing from the FBI, CNN reported Monday.

Kelly, picked by Trump last Friday to replace Reince Priebus as White House chief of staff, called Comey after the firing and told him he was considering stepping down according to two sources who spoke with CNN.

"John was angry and hurt by what he saw and the way (Comey) was treated," one of the sources said.

Comey, who was abruptly fired May 9, found out about his firing from a TV news report and thought it was a prank. Trump, in a letter to Comey, said the firing was necessary to restore "public trust and confidence" in the FBI.

Comey and Kelly spoke when Comey was traveling back from California to Washington, D.C., He told Kelly to not resign.
