Joe Scarborough: Obama 'Has It Just About Right' on ISIS

By    |   Monday, 08 Sep 2014 06:08 PM

Morning Joe cable TV host Joe Scarborough, a frequent critic of President Barack Obama, defended the commander-in-chief Monday, saying he "has it just about right" when it comes to the radical Islamic State militants.

Writing for Politico, NBC News' new senior political analyst for "Meet the Press" praised the president for refusing to "rush in with guns blazing."

"When it comes down to facing down the greatest threat since 9/11, I think this president has it just about right," Scarborough writes — adding in a swipe at the possible 2016 Democratic presidential candidate:

"Let Republicans and neocons like Hillary Clinton play the cynical game that politicians love to play by second guessing his lack of action in Syria and speculating about what might have been."

Besides, Scarborough writes, nobody else would have done any better handling the explosive growth and aggression of the Islamic State (ISIS), also known as ISIL.

"Neither Democrats nor Republicans would have supported a third war against a Muslim country in less than a decade even if Barack Obama wanted to launch a full-scale invasion into Syria," he writes.

"And as Dwight Eisenhower taught us during the Suez Crisis in 1956, less is usually more when it comes to military operations in the Middle East."

Scarborough writes he expects the president to tell the American people "about launching a military operation that has the support of the Arab League, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and most of the Arab world."

"It's only a start in our battle against ISIL, but it is a good start," he writes.

The Washington Post Monday, citing unnamed sources, said national security officials are expected to brief lawmakers in the Senate on Wednesday and do the same for House lawmakers Thursday.

Scarborough's support is in sharp contrast to his admitted blasts at Obama on everything from Obamacare to "his massive spending programs [that] would undermine American capitalism."

He also recounts that he "repeatedly warned against tripling the number of troops in Afghanistan," "condemned the administration's expansive drone policy, and have always had concerns about a management style that leaves the president isolated in D.C. and inside his own White House."

"Let's not argue over counter realities and instead stick to the reality that confronted the White House and Congress," he urges.
