Former Sen. Jim DeMint is expected to be replaced as president of the conservative Heritage Foundation, The New York Times reported.

The anticipated shake-up comes as the budget, tax reform and healthcare — all issues the foundation has tried to influence — are before Congress, according to the newspaper.

Politico reported an announcement about DeMint's future at the think tank could come as early as Friday.

One source, identified as a "GOP operative," told the website that DeMint's removal as president was imminent.

"There's massive turmoil over there right now," the source said.

DeMint has been in contract negotiations. His current contract is up at the end of the year, Politico said.

He earned more than $1 million in 2015, according to tax documents, the Times reported.

Word of his possible departure came after a dispute with board members about the direction of the think tank, Politico said.

There are some members on the Heritage board who believe DeMint has made the organization too bombastic and political, the website reported.

"He has been a congressman and senator," one board member is quoted by Politico. "They are solo performers. When you are in the Senate, life is all about the senators. CEO skills are different than senator skills. I think it boils down to attributes. I don't think it is particularly personal."

The foundation played a "significant role in shaping President Trump's cabinet and tilting it far to the right," Jeremy Peters and Maggie Haberman of The New York Times reported.

Ed Feulner, former Heritage president is expected to take over as interim president, according to Politico.
