GOP Rep. Zeldin Angry Obama Didn't Mention ISIS Threat to Jews

A New York lawmaker is upset President Barack Obama's proposed anti-Islamic State (ISIS) war resolution says nothing about the threat the group poses to Jews.

Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin – the only GOP Jewish member of Congress – told CNN the omission is glaring: Obama's proposed resolution to authorize military force notes the threat ISIS has posed to Iraqi Christians, Yezidis and Turkmens.

"I see an understanding, a recognition in the resolution with regards to ISIS attacks on Muslims, on Christians and others, and I didn't see a reference to Jews," Zeldin told CNN.

"And one of the efforts I've been involved in is trying to raise awareness for the rising tide of anti-Semitism."

Zeldin's criticism comes on the heels of Obama's assertion that the terror attack at a Kosher grocery in Paris last month was "random" and not specifically aimed at Jews.

The White House was later forced to clarify Obama didn't mean to imply the incident wasn't motivated by anti-Semitism.

Zeldin, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said there's no excuse for the omission this time around.

"I think that when the White House is drafting a resolution for the authorization of force, that every single word, every phrase in there is done deliberately – it has to be," Zeldin told CNN. "Jews should have been included by the White House."

CNN reports the war request draft language borrows from the resolution passed in the then-Democratic led Senate Foreign Relations Committee last year, which stated:

"Whereas ISIL [another name for ISIS] has threatened genocide and committed vicious acts of violence against religious and ethnic minority groups, including Iraqi Christians, Yezidi, and Turkmen populations."

But Zeldin argues the Kosher grocery attack is proof the Islamic State jihadists are committed to vicious acts against Jews around the world.

"I strongly believe we were reminded in Paris that these radical Islamic extremists, they want to wipe Israel off the map," he told CNN. "They target not only Jews but our freedom our exceptionalism as Americans – the whole Western world."

"The pursuit of ISIS includes a threat not just to Muslims, not just to Jews, not just to Christians, but everyone and it all should be recognized in the resolution," he added.

Zeldin vows he'll work to get Jews included in any final text of the use of force resolution.
