Jeb Praises Top WH Accomplishment: NSA Metadata Programs

By    |   Tuesday, 21 Apr 2015 07:21 PM

Likely GOP presidential candidate Jeb Bush says the Obama administration's top accomplishment has been "protections of the homeland" through the National Security Agency's controversial phone-data spying program — even though the president's public support is largely silent.

In an interview Tuesday with radio host Michael Medved, the former Florida governor said NSA spy programs have been "enhanced" under President Barack Obama.

Yet, Bush charges, Obama "never defends them or openly admits it."

"I would say the best part of the Obama administration would be his continuance of the protections of the homeland using the big metadata programs," Bush told Medved.

Bush praised NSA’s bulk collection of phone data as "an important service," and defended it as carried out while protecting individual civil liberties. And he praised the administration for standing up to pressure from Democrats, civil liberties groups and some Republicans.

"He has not abandoned them," Bush said of the controversial programs.

The Hill notes the spying programs have critics decrying their invasion of privacy, and supporters defending the program as critical in combating terrorism. The split in opinions can also be seen among the crowded field of possible Republican presidential candidates.

For example, Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul has been a vocal critic of the bulk collection of phone records, and Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz co-sponsored legislation to scale back the spying by requiring the NSA to get a court order before taking records from private phone companies.

In his interview, Bush also needled Obama, asserting his other accomplishment was delivering "two of the biggest wave elections since the 1920s" to Republicans.
