Questioning President Barack Obama on cash payments made to Iran, Republican Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford said he wanted a written answer by Sept. 19, as reported in the Politico.

Lankford shot a series of 13 questions for the president, most of them related to cash payments delivered to Iran. Lankford also asked the president whether there was any evidence that the money had been used for terrorist activity.

"Over the course of three days in January 2016, the United States paid the government of Iran $400 million in cash, lifted sanctions that facilitated that cash payment and then transferred an additional $1.3 billion in cash from a taxpayer-funded account as an interest payment to the Islamic Republic," Lankford wrote in his letter addressed to the White House.

"You promised transparency at the beginning of your administration, which is an essential and reasonable expectation of an open Republic like our nation. The American people should know how their hard-earned tax dollars were spent and the details of agreements that were made on their behalf," Lankford wrote.

"Every American's signature was implicitly place on that Agreement by your administration, so every American should have access to the facts of the agreement."

Lankford also inquired about any "direct or indirect payments" from the U.S. to Iran since mid-2015, or any ongoing negotiations between the two countries.

In January, the State Department announced a $1.7 billion payment to Iran to settle a foreign military sales case from the 1970's.

Doubting the payment to be a ransom, Republicans have questioned the timing of the cash delivery, which happens to coincide with the release of U.S. hostages in Iran.

Lankford also sought an answer from Obama regarding a report from a Washington-based think tank, the Institute for Science and International Security, which found that Iran was granted ‘secret exemptions' from some of the nuclear agreement's restrictions.
