Rep. Lankford: Defunding Obamacare Off the Table for Now

By    |   Thursday, 10 Oct 2013 05:42 PM

House Republicans have taken defunding Obamacare off the table – for now.

Rep. James Lankford, R-Okla., told CNN Thursday that the House GOP will offer six-week extension of the debt limit, while putting defunding the Affordable Care Act on hold.

With twin issues of the government shutdown and raising the debt ceiling hitting simultaneously, Lankford told CNN's Jake Tapper, "Let's take one of them off the table, and let's finish out the work of the negotiations on the second one, and let's get it done."

About 20 House Republicans were meeting with Obama Thursday afternoon.

Lankford described the offer as meeting President Barack Obama halfway, though Democrats have accused Republicans of holding them hostage by tying defunding Obamacare to the continuing budget resolution.

Disagreement over talks on that issue have forced a partial government shutdown.

Lankford said his constituents overwhelmingly don't want Obamacare to go into effect at all. That isn't going to happen, he admitted, so he suggested not penalizing people who don't want to particpate or who have made a mistake in the glitch-riddled website used for signing up.
