Fatah, Hamas Celebrate Jerusalem Synagogue Murders

By    |   Tuesday, 18 Nov 2014 09:25 PM

While Israelis mourned the deaths of five people in Tuesday's terror attack at a Jerusalem synagogue, the reaction was decidedly different in Hamas-ruled Gaza, the Jerusalem Post reported.

In Rafah, revelers carried axes and posters of the terrorists who carried out the Jerusalem attack and handed out candies to celebrate their handiwork.

Loudspeakers at mosques boomed out congratulations. Hamas praised the attack, and Palestinian radio broadcasts described the perpetrators as "martyrs."

Although Hamas did not directly claim responsibility for the Jerusalem attack, a spokesman for the group urged "the continuation of revenge operations [against Israel]" and stressed that "the Israeli occupation bears responsibility for tension in Jerusalem."

Palestinian Media Watch -- an Israeli group that monitors the Palestinian media -- indicates that the reactions of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and members of his Fatah organization were mixed.

Abbas' office issued a statement declaring that it "condemns the murder of the worshippers" at the synagogue.

But other Fatah operatives praised the attack. Sultan Abu Al-Einein, an adviser to Abbas, praised it on his Facebook page, calling it a "heroic operation" and posting graphic pictures showing dead Jews wearing prayer shawls. He called the terrorists "martyrs."

Several members of the Palestinian parliament's Fatah movement referred to the synagogue killers as "martyrs," and Fatah announced on Facebook that celebrants were handing out candy in honor of the attack.

Fatah spokesman Ahmad Assaf called the attack "the natural result" of "Israeli violations in Jerusalem."
