Charles Krauthammer: ISIS Is Global 'Ideological War'

By    |   Tuesday, 23 Sep 2014 02:19 PM

The battle against the Islamic State (ISIS) is a global "ideological war" that reaches into many nations because of its roots in the Muslim religion practiced by a billion people worldwide, said syndicated communist Charles Krauthammer.

"This is an ideological war. It's worldwide," Krauthammer told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday. "This is extremism of a particular kind. And, the reason that it's a powerful one and a global one is because it is rooted in a religion of a billion people."

While the majority of Muslims "reject the radical Islam," Krauthammer said nations would not defeat ISIS unless there was an effort to "rally the moderate Muslims against radicals."

"In the end it is a fight against a wing, we don't know how large, of a great religion. And, unless we recognize that, we don't know who we're fighting," he said.

In identifying the threat, Krauthammer said it was important for President Barack Obama to use the word "Islamic," rather than calling the militant terrorists "extremists."

"The thing he stresses, and that our president will never say, is to use the word Islamic. He speaks of them as extremists, as if their extremism falls out of the sky by accident.

"We need a president willing to admit that in public. Look, even the Islamic State itself calls itself Islamic. And, Obama won't," he said.

Krauthammer said Europe's absence from the airstrikes the U.S. and Arab allies conducted Monday evening against ISIS in Syria was likely due to problems during the Iraq War, when they were "burned a bit" as the effort lost popular support. However, he said the U.S. was "sorely disappointed" by Turkey's "glaring absence" in Monday's attacks.

"They've been in a double game. They've allowed a lot of ISIS fighters to come in. Turkey has an Islamist government, moderate if you like. But, they support the [Muslim] Brotherhood and Egypt and Hamas. So, they're a little bit on the fence," he said. "If we can enlist Turkey, that will be a master stroke."

Krauthammer said he believed ISIS knew the beheadings of two American journalists would draw the U.S. into a battle as they fought to be "the new al-Qaida."

"They want to supersede everybody. They want to be the one true crusade against the West, if you like. And, by taking on America, you rise to our stature. I think that was behind the beheadings. I think their bringing us in was intended," he said.
