Pounded by months of U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, ISIS has lost nearly all its access to Iraqi oil — and is protecting its remaining oil-rich territory in Syria, Stars and Stripes reported Wednesday.

In a briefing, a defense official who requested anonymity said there's about 15,000 ISIS fighters in Iraq and Syria; about half are in or near Mosul in Iraq, or Raqqa in Syria.

The rest are in eastern Syria, where ISIS can still access and sell oil, the official said.

"They are largely denied access to oil and gas in Iraq at this point, and so certainly the most fertile oil and gas fields are probably in Deir ez-Zoir province," the official said.

"There are still some oil and gas fields in the vicinity of Palmyra [in Syria]... that they still have access too."

For months, coalition airstrikes have targeted ISIS's oil assets, destroying tanker trucks and distribution facilities, diminishing its finances, Stars and Stripes reported.

"Their largest cash revenue is still an ability to extract oil and gas and to refine and sell it," the official said, noting ISIS also taxes the local population, and has cash reserves seized from captured territory, which pays their fighters and family members.

"They still possess large numbers of basic arms and ammunition and explosive material," the official said, noting when the Iraqi army fell, ISIS seized many of its munitions. "I think that's part of how they are able to sustain themselves on diminishing financial resources."
