ISIS Is Anti-Smoking and Violators Could Be Beheaded

The Islamic State (ISIS) has taken an especially hard line on one of the world's many vices — cigarette smoking — and it might be worthy of a beheading.

The argument is that smoking is forbidden because ISIS considers it a slow form of suicide, even though it doesn't technically violate Islamic law, the Los Angeles Times reported. The terror group also prohibits drinking alcohol and cursing.

After ISIS took control of land in Syria, one of the first things it did was close down tobacco shops and water-pipe cafes, which are common in the region. Chain smoking itself is also common.

According to the World Health Organization, almost 50 percent of men in Syria are smokers and 10 percent of all women.

Smokers who live in the region will reportedly go across the borders of the "caliphate" to enjoy a cigarette or will attempt to smuggle cigarettes despite the harsh rules.

Mohammad Khalil smoked a cigarette on the Turkey side of the Syrian border recently, explaining that "once I go across I can't smoke in the open."

The body of a beheaded man was found with a cigarette still in his mouth, and his body was nearby with the words, "This is evil, you Sheikh," written across it in Arabic. The man was a deputy police officer for the jihadist group.

The French man Flavien Moreau, 27, who traveled to Syria to join ISIS returned to France primarily because he couldn't kick his smoking addiction. Moreau was convicted of terrorism charges in France upon his return.

He told a French news station that he "really struggled with not smoking."

"I had brought Nicorette gum with me, but it wasn't enough. So I left my gun with my [commander] and I left," Moreau said.

According to the Times, first time violators are sentenced with 40 lashes. Those who continue to violate the statute will receive more lashes plus prison time. If ISIS members continue to smoke, it may result in execution.
