It's looking more and more likely that Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi was killed in a May airstrike, with an ISIS preacher breaking down in tears Friday after mentioning his name.

The Daily Mail reports Abu Qutaiba was giving a sermon when he started crying after referencing Al-Baghdadi. Qutaiba also reportedly mumbled something that suggested Al-Baghdadi had died.

Rumors have been swirling for weeks that Al-Baghdadi was killed in a May 28 Russian airstrike. There has not yet been official confirmation, although Iran state media said Thursday Al-Baghdadi is deceased.

"Terrorist Baghdadi is definitely dead," Iran's media quoted cleric Ali Shirazi as saying. The outlet later updated the news item by omitting that quote.

Iraqi forces, meanwhile, announced they have ended the ISIS caliphate in Mosul after retaking a key mosque in the city. About 200 ISIS fighters remain in a handful of neighborhoods there. Iraqi forces, who are backed by the U.S. military, expect to defeat them within four or five days.

Information from Reuters was used in this report.
