An air base in Iraq used by Iraqi and American military forces was attacked with a chemical weapon that likely came from the Islamic State (ISIS) this week, according to a new report.

A CNN story claims either a rocket or an artillery shell hit the Qayarrah air base, located south of Mosul. Officials examined it and found that it contained some type of mustard gas. It's now undergoing more testing.

Americans who were involved in the alleged incident went through a decontamination procedure. None of them have exhibited any signs they were exposed to the chemical.

Officials told CNN the weapon was "low purity," "poorly weaponized," and "ineffective."

CNN's Barbara Starr spoke about the attack on Wednesday's edition of "The Lead With Jake Tapper."

"The shell landed. U.S. troops went out to look at the shell. They saw something suspicious," Starr said. "They tested it and the test came back for mustard agent. They're testing it further. ISIS is up in that area and they're desperate to hold on to Mosul."

CNN claims the first chemical test on the questionable substance discovered inside the ordinance was positive for mustard gas. A follow-up test was negative.

There has been much discussion this year about whether ISIS has access to chemical weapons. A Wall Street Journal story in April claimed the terror group was using a university chemical lab in Mosul to produce them.

ISIS was reported to have used mustard gas in an attack on a Syrian military airport in the spring. And in March, Arizona Sen. John McCain confirmed the Obama administration knows ISIS has a chemical weapons factory somewhere inside Syria.

It was reported last month that Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime might still have chemical weapons in its possession despite vowing to destroy them.
