CNN: 68 Percent Still Support Nuclear Talks With Iran

A significant majority of Americans support direct negotiations with Iran about the country's nuclear program, a new poll has found.

According to a CNN/ ORC poll conducted March 13-15 of 1,009 adults, 68 percent of Americans say they back direct negotiations, compared to 29 percent who oppose. That figure is down from September 2013 when 76 percent of Americans were in favor of it.

Support for direct diplomatic negotiations appears to hold across party lines, with 77 percent of Democrats in favor, 65 percent of Republicans who support it, and 64 percent of independents.

About half of Americans, or 49 percent, say that Republican senators went too far by sending a letter to Iran's leaders that warned that Congress would need to approve the deal for it to go into effect. Thirty-nine percent thought it was an appropriate response to the way negotiations over Iran's nuclear program were going.

Opinions were divided along party lines.

Sixty-seven percent of Democrats said they thought the letter went too far, but 52 percent of Republicans felt it was appropriate. Among independents, 47 percent thought it went too far compared to 42 felt it was appropriate.

Just 18 percent think the letter helped U.S. efforts to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while 32 percent thought it hurt those efforts, and 44 percent said it had no impact, the poll found.

Forty-seven Republican senators, including four potential 2016 presidential candidates, signed the letter that prompted a backlash from Democrats. Vice President Joe Biden harshly condemned it, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted that "no one considering running for commander-in-chief should be signing on."

The results come as Secretary of State John Kerry resumed meetings this week with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Switzerland. The two are discussing a deal that would relax sanctions on Iran in exchange for greater transparency surrounding the country's nuclear programs, CNN reported.
