Poll: 49 Percent of Americans Support Iran Nuke Talks

By    |   Monday, 30 Mar 2015 07:45 PM

Almost half of Americans approve of the negotiations the United States and five other nations are having with Iran regarding that country's nuclear program, while most would like the U.S. Congress to finalize the deal once it's reached, according to a poll.

The Pew Research Center numbers
show that 49 percent of Americans favor the negotiations while 40 percent oppose them.

However, 62 percent would like Congress to have the ultimate authority when it comes to making a deal official, and 63 percent say "Iranian leaders are not serious about addressing nuclear concerns."

The poll results were released one day before Tuesday's deadline to hammer out a deal.
Several reports say Iran is making a last-minute push to get as much out of the deal as it can.

A few more highlights from the poll results:
  • 29 percent think President Barack Obama should have final authority over making the deal official.
  • 31 percent have a favorable view of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (47 percent of Republicans, 19 percent of Democrats).
  • 31 percent have "a lot" of sympathy for Israel, as opposed to 11 percent who felt the same about the Palestinians.
Critics of the negotiations with Iran say the U.S. is caving in to the country's demands. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, for example, said he doesn't think Iran will necessarily allow U.N. weapons inspectors access to its nuclear facilities.

"The North Koreans actually kicked out the U.N. inspectors, the same inspectors now who would be monitoring the stockpile in Iran," Portman said Monday.

"If you look at what's happened just in the last year, with, again, these same inspectors and how Iran has thwarted their efforts to effectively monitor what's going on now and look at the militarization part of their program, it doesn't bode well."

The White House, meanwhile, is reaching out to members of Congress to drum up support for the deal with the deadline just hours away.
