DHS: 200,000 Illegals Being Cut From Obamacare

By    |   Thursday, 12 Feb 2015 02:16 PM

Undocumented immigrants who cannot prove legal residency will lose their insurance coverage under Obamacare, The Wall Street Journal reports.

An estimated 200,000 residents will lose coverage, the Department of Health and Human Service said Thursday. The cutoff date is set for Feb. 28 for those signed up in 2014 but failed to provide enough information for officials to determine their legal immigration status moving forward, the Journal reports.

"Most of the people who are being cut off have had coverage through the site for a year or more," the Journal reported.

Opponents of the government-mandated healthcare plan have long been angry over coverage of undocumented residents, noting the burden to cover such care.

Some are also decrying a loophole, according to The Washington Times, that gives businesses a $3,000-per-employee incentive to hire illegals over their U.S.-born counterparts.

Reported the Times: "Under the Affordable Care Act, that means businesses who hire [illegal immigrants] won’t have to pay a penalty for not providing them health coverage — making them $3,000 more attractive than a similar native-born worker, whom the business by law would have to cover."

Some conservatives have also denounced another loophole in the healthcare law that says undocumented residents are not subject to the tax penalty that others, who lack coverage but did not sign up for insurance, must pay under the Obamacare rules, Breitbart reported. They will remain exempt like other low-income residents.
