Seventy-five people born in the United States were arrested on terrorism charges last year — more than any year since the 9/11 attacks — with nearly 90 percent of them loyal to the Islamic State, the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security said in a report released Tuesday.

"In 2015, [homegrown violent extremists] demonstrated an ability to operate in New Jersey and throughout the United States while connecting with like-minded individuals online and acting independently from organized terrorist groups," the agency said in its report, according to The Washington Free Beacon.

"Since late 2014, a variety of radical groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have encouraged [extremists] to attack in their home countries," the report said.

Eighty-seven percent of those arrested were linked to ISIS, with the remainder working with the Al-Nusra Front, an al-Qaida offshoot, and other jihadist groups. The largest number of terrorists lived in New York.

Most of the extremists were caught providing material support to the terrorist groups, the Free Beacon reported, while 21 percent were arrested while planning attacks in the U.S.

In addition, 10 percent successfully executed attacks in California, New York, Tennessee, and Massachusetts, according to the report.

Others were operating in such states as California, Texas, Missouri and Illinois — as well as states along the East Coast, the Free Beacon reports.

While only 4 percent of the terrorists fled overseas, nearly half of the 75 arrested tried to travel overseas. Many sought to obtain training or resources from the terror organizations, according to the data.

"Al-Qaida didn’t die with [Osama] bin Laden, no matter how much the journalists seeking [President Barack] Obama's good graces desired," Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon analyst, told the Free Beacon. "The Islamic State wasn’t a mere JV terror team, as not only Iraq and Syria — but also Egypt, Libya, and Afghanistan — know too well."
