While the GOP establishment is hoping for former Florida Jeb Bush – or even Florida Sen. Marco Rubio – to move to the top of the presidential polls, the calendar is not on their sides, warns The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza.

The Feb. 1 Iowa Caucuses may seem far away, Cillizza says, but with only 10 days until Thanksgiving and the start of a long holiday season, Americans will be paying far less attention to the campaign.

Neither front-runner, Donald Trump nor Ben Carson, has ever held political office, leaving party brass fearing they they don't have the acumen on foreign affairs to handle such crises as the Paris terrorist attacks.

But if they can hold onto their leads – both are at mid- to low 20 percent support – by Thanksgiving, they are likely to remain there until after New Year's, Cillizza argues.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz are climbing in the polls, but Cillizza believes they will stay far down at third and fourth through the holidays as well.

"Put simply: Any Republican who tells you that Trump and/or Carson are a fad who will fade before Iowa is engaging in the most wishful of thinking," Cillizza writes. "It’s a near-certainty at this point that the top tier going into Iowa will look almost exactly like it does today."
